ASVCP Symposium 2027 Abstract Submission Guidelines
Call for Abstracts

The American Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology welcomes the submission of research abstracts for consideration of oral presentation or scientific poster presentation at the ASVCP Symposium 2027. Research should have relevance to the field of clinical pathology. Examples include discovery or validation of diagnostic tests, exploration of pathophysiologic mechanisms of disease, detailed description of case series, toxicologic pathology, and clinical pathology education.

Important Dates

  • Deadline for Abstract Submission: November 30, 2026 (11:59pm ET)
  • Notification of acceptance: around January 15, 2027
  • PDFs of all final posters due: February 15, 2027 (11:59pm ET)
  • ASVCP Symposium 2027: April 16 – 19, 2027 Asheville, North Carolina

NOTE: If you live outside of the US and will be applying for a travel visa, it is strongly recommended to start the application process no later than October 15, 2026 (before the notification of acceptance date in January 2027). For assistance with the visa application process, complete this visa invitation letter request form, then please email it to ASVCPsymposium@gmail.com.

Submission of an abstract implies commitment to present at the Symposium (as an oral presentation or scientific poster). All presenters of accepted abstracts are expected to travel to and register for the Symposium at their own expense. Please do not submit research if you are not planning to attend the Symposium. Abstract submitters are encouraged to review all information below as well as abstract award information prior to submission.

Call for abstracts

Abstracts will be considered for oral or scientific poster presentation to take place on Sunday, April 18th, 2027. Abstract submitters who meet specified eligibility criteria may indicate an interest in being considered for the ASVCP Young Investigator Awards (see end of document). Abstract presenters must attend and present at the Symposium to be considered for awards.

Previously published or presented research

Abstracts that have been/will be presented in current or substantially similar form in the preceding 6 months are eligible but this must be indicated as part of the submission process. Data that are published (excluding preprints) or in press at the time of abstract submission are not eligible. In situations where a journal article is in preparation at the time of abstract submission, it is recommended that the authors declare that the content of the presentation is based on a forthcoming article.

Abstract formatting

  • Abstracts may not exceed 250 words, excluding the title, author names, and disclosure statement.
  • Abstracts should be informative, written in complete sentences, and structured using the following headlines: Background, Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
  • Abstracts that describe data as pending, not shown, or “results will be discussed” will not be accepted.
  • Abstract should include all authors' first and last names and middle initials, and the name of the institution(s) of the authors at the time the work was done.

Additional notes about abstracts

  • The abstract submitter must obtain agreement from all co-authors to be listed as contributors prior to submission.
  • All abstracts are considered final once submitted and no corrections to the abstract or author listing may be made after the review period ends.
  • The abstract submitter will serve as the primary point of contact about the abstract.
  • During submission, one author must be designated as the presenter (this does not have to be the submitter).
  • Abstracts will be peer reviewed and may be rejected if submission instructions are not followed.
  • If accepted for oral presentation, abstracts will be published in Veterinary Clinical Pathology exactly as submitted.
  • ASVCP is not responsible for author errors.

Disclosures Statement

All abstracts must include a statement at the bottom of their abstract, headed Disclosures, on behalf of all co-authors, regarding any disclosures for their work. This enables conference attendees to determine whether or not there may have been bias or the perception of bias. This can occur when any of the authors (or someone related to the authors e.g. family member, spouse, friend) has a relationship with any entity that has an interest (direct or indirect) related to the submission. Examples include:

  • Any form of support (financial or otherwise) for the study described in the abstract.
  • Any form of support for other work that the authors are involved in.
  • Financial relationships (which may be unrelated to the subject matter of the abstract) whereby the individual or relative benefits by receiving a salary, royalties, consulting fees, speaker honoraria, ownership interests (e.g. stock or stock options), or other benefits.
  • Indirect benefits, i.e. where the author, or author's institution, benefits from the results of the study. An example would be where the author (or their institution) runs a laboratory service, which performs an assay that is discussed in the abstract.

Please note that it is best to practice “full disclosure” and err on the side of caution; if in doubt, please include the item. If accepted for oral presentation the speaker must display their disclosures on the second slide of their presentation (i.e. immediately following the title slide), and similarly, disclosures should be listed on posters.

Submission of an abstract provides assurance of

  • Adherence to the rules and scientific validity of the presentation
  • Investigations involving research animals done using the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (http://oacu.od.nih.gov/regs/guide/guide.pdf) or equivalent guidelines.

Platform presenters agree to

  • Register for and travel to the Symposium at their own expense. Student and trainees are eligible for a reduced ASVCP Symposium registration fee, as indicated on the ASVCP Symposium website.
  • Bring their presentation in PowerPoint format to the Speaker Ready Room on Saturday, April 17th, 2027.
  • Present at the Symposium according to the schedule communicated in the acceptance email.
  • Email ASVCPsymposium@gmail.com immediately should any issue arise with any of the above.
  • Not present images or figures that are not your own, unpublished work unless the presenter has obtained proper permission and the images/figures are properly cited.

Poster presentations

Abstracts that are accepted for poster presentation will be showcased on the afternoon of Sunday, April 18th, 2027. Posters will be presented in the Exhibit Hall with scheduled times when the authors are expected to be available next to their posters to answer attendee questions about their research.

Poster presenters agree to

  • Upload a PDF copy of their final poster by the published deadline, understanding that the document will be used for poster award judging (if applicable) and made available to meeting registrants before, during, and after the Symposium.
  • Register for and travel to the meeting at their own expense.
  • Bring their scientific poster with them to the meeting (or print onsite if offered by the conference hotel).

ASVCP Young Investigator Awards

The ASVCP Young Investigator Awards recognize and award outstanding oral presentations given by residents or graduate students in the field of clinical pathology.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates must have a degree in veterinary medicine and be enrolled in a residency or graduate program in veterinary clinical pathology or related discipline. The oral presentation must be given by the candidate during the Abstracts session at the ASVCP Symposium and must describe original work of the candidate that involves either: 1) clinical case reports or applied or translational research, or 2) basic scientific research relating to clinical pathology.

Award Categories

Two awards will be given. One award will be given to the best oral presentation involving applied/clinical or translational research or case reviews that provide new knowledge in the field of veterinary clinical pathology. One award will be given to the best oral presentation involving basic research that provides new knowledge in the field of veterinary clinical pathology. The award category can be requested by the trainee, but final assignment of the category will be determined by the judges.

Award Selection

Award selection will be based on scientific content, abstract composition, clarity of presentation, and the ability to answer questions. Each resident or graduate student may submit only one presentation for this competition. Candidates awarded YIA the preceding year will not be eligible for an award in the subsequent year. The winner of each category will receive $500 from ASVCP.

Announcement of Awards

Awards will be announced during the ASVCP Symposium and monetary awards sent to the recipients after the symposium.

Individuals who wish to have their research considered for award recognition must indicate that interest as part of the abstract submission process.
